JULY 18, 2001. TV FOOTY fans were stunned on Thursday night when resident Footy Show enfante terrible Sam Newman actually got a spontaneous laugh with a joke that was inoffensive and genuinely funny.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said viewer Trevor McGuire. “The joke was clean and it was funny. The camera went to Sam, he said the words and I actually laughed. There was no reference to dwarfs, sluts, bitches, blacks, the mentally handicapped or any other minority.”

Newman is believed to have been locked behind closed doors by Nine producers after the show, where it is believed they demanded an explanation for this lapse in his trademark belittling style.

“Who cares? The people behind the camera are nothing but a small-minded, petty, ugly, pathetic, sexually-inactive bunch of pansies,” Newman later told reporters, showing he was right back in form.
