AUG 22, 2001. EMBARRASSED league officials admit the criteria behind the Norwich Rising Star Award may have to be reviewed after veteran Hawk ruckman Paul Salmon walked away with the award last night.

The former Bomber turned Hawk won the League’s trophy for best young player when a glitch in the fine print allowed his 305 games as only five appearances.

“It turns out the Rising Star computer has been rebuilt from an old Holden and at 300 games, it ‘clocked over’, back to 000,” a spokesman said.

Salmon said he was delighted to win the award and hoped to put the prizemoney towards a new BMX bike and a set of Digimon trading cards.

Docker Paul Hasleby, who had been hot favourite for the award, said he hoped to gain some consolation by being placed on Fremantle’s “veterans” list. Haselby pointed out that, having played more than 10 games for the club, he was practically a veteran there.
