MAY 17, 2000. THE HAMPTON Valley League was in uproar last night when it was found that a ruckman for the Catawoomba thirds was not called "Spider" by his teammates.

"This kind of thing just isn't on," said a League spokesman. "There are traditions in footy and calling the ruckman 'Spider' is one of them."

The ruckman, Trevor Smith, has fiery red hair and is known as "Bluey" by the Catawoomba players.

"Fair enough, Bluey is a pretty good nickname but we have to clamp down on this," said the Hampton League spokesman.

Bluey told reporters he was just happy to get a game and was taking his nickname one week at a time.
